George III Perpetual Almanack stick barometer

Fine and rare George III ‘Perpetual Almanack’ stick barometer by Watkins of Charing Cross; the mahogany frame with a moulded edge and ebony and boxwood banding, a domed cistern-cover and an angled pediment. The open silvered register with a vernier and a mercury thermometer, below a further panel incorporating a perpetual calendar indicating days of the week, days of the month and the months with numbers of their days, adjustable by two turn-keys with bone knobs.

Francis Watkins of 5 Charing Cross was a distinguished maker, best known for his angle barometer which incorporated a Perpetual Regulation of Time device and this most unusual barometer would appear to be a development of this system. He was working from 1747 to 1784 when he was succeeded by his two nephews.
