Fine George III period long-case clock by JOS. JOHNSON of DUDLEY, in a handsome mahogany case of distinctive North Country character; the eight-day striking movement with a 12½"arched and silvered dial with engraved Rococo scrollwork spandrels and centre, fitted with an uncommon sweep seconds hand, concentric calendar indicator and a mechanism and dial indicating phases of the moon. The richly-figured case with a bold bombé base with quoined fore-corners and most unusual brass fretted front bracket feet. The hood and trunk with brass stop-fluted Corinthian columns; the hood surmounted by black and gilt painted spandrels below a blocked and moulded scrolled pediment with brass paterae and ball-and spire finials.Joseph Johnson is known to have been working in Dudley from 1760 to 1795.
