Pair of William IV period mahogany hall-chairs by Johnstone Jupe & Co., London; the boldly carved backs with scrolled sides, stylised lotus and leaf motifs and central shields; the planked seats with turned front legs with octagonal shafts. The partnership of John Johnstone & Robert Jupe was active at 67 New Bond Street from 1835 - 40 and was celebrated for making elaborate extending dining-tables. These chairs bear the stamp '3540'
