George III period mahogany ‘Cockpen’ arm-chair

George III period mahogany 'Cockpen' arm-chair with rounded rails and the square back and arms with turned spindles; the stuff-over seat re-upholstered and covered in brass-nailed old rose hide, on chamfered square legs. The seat-rails have been renewed. Circa 1770

Chairs of this distinctive form, although more often with Chinese style railing, were supplied to Cockpen Church, Midlothian and the name has long been associated with variants of the original pattern so this chair may be of Scottish origin.
