George III period mahogany ‘Cockpen’ arm-chair with rounded rails, a square back and arms with swept under supports.  The back and arms with Chinese style railings; a cane seat with a loose cushion in crimson draylon;  on square legs and original castors with pierced brackets; a fine example.  Circa 1770

Chairs of this distinctive form were supplied to Cockpen Church, Midlothian and the name has become associated with variants of the original pattern.
